Community Service Requirements for Residents

Households participating in the Public Housing Program (low-income) are required to complete community service and/or participate in economic self-sufficiency programs on a regular basis.

  • The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Office of Public and Indian Housing, mandates that public housing residents in the city of East Hartford, unemployed adults 18 and older (with the exception of the elderly and non-elderly disabled), are required to complete either 8 hours per month of community service within the community, or participate in an economic self-sufficiency program for 8 hours a month.
  • Requirements may also be met by a combination of 8 hours of activity in both community service and self-sufficiency programs.
  • Hours may not be skipped one month and doubled up the next, unless special circumstances warrant it.
